Blood drive, Work in Progress Talks finish busy week's slate

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

 

Thursday-Friday, Sept. 26-27

Campus parking spot up for grabs during UMMC blood drive

Participants in the Medical Center's quarterly blood drive scheduled from Thursday-Friday, Sept. 26-27, will automatically be registered in a drawing for a parking space on campus for the upcoming quarter and will receive a Mississippi Blood Services T-shirt.

The winner of the parking space drawing will be randomly selected from among all UMMC faculty, staff and students who participate in the blood drive or who donate to Mississippi Blood Services on behalf of UMMC during the current quarter. The winner will have parking privileges in the designated campus parking space at the learning resource center beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. 

The UMMC blood drive is scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the MBS donor coach at the Guyton Research Center and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the MBS donor coach at the Jackson Medical Mall.
 
Photo identification is required to donate. Mississippi Blood Services suggests all donors eat within four hours of giving blood and drink plenty of fluids before and after the donation.

Thursday, Sept. 26

Microbiology faculty to give Work in Progress talks

​Two faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology will give Work in Progress Talks presentations at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in room N547 (Microbiology Library).

Dr. Chris Meade, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, will present "Microbial Determinants of Trichomoniasism" and Dr. Greg Chinchar, professor of microbiology and immunology, will present "Elucidation of Genes Essential for Virus Replication."

Friday, Sept. 27

UT-Southwestern professor to introduce NIH Research Policy

Dr. Elizabeth Heitman, professor of ethics in science and medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will give a webinar, "Introduction to NIH Research Policy: Regulations and Standards for Responsible Research," from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.

 M.D.-Ph.D. candidate to explore evidence of God's existence

Subhi "Talal" Younes, an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate at UMMC, will give the Faith Seeking Understanding presentation, "Can We Be Good Without God?" from noon-12:50 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, in classroom 6A.

Pharmacy practice leader to keynote ASHP Foundation event

Sara J. White, a nationally recognized pharmacy practice leader, will give the keynote address to the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Foundation Visiting Leaders Program, "Personal Leadership: Being Successful in Your Life/Career," from 10:15-11:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Washington faculty to cover optical imaging, brain manipulation

Dr. Andy Y. Shih, associate professor at the Seattle Children's Research Institute and University of Washington, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Optical Imaging and Manipulation of Microvessels in the Living Brain," at noon on Monday, Sept. 30, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Dentistry students to give Dental Grand Rounds presentation

​Taylor Bolland, D4, will present “Fabrication of a Maxillary Obturator in a Patient with an Oral-Antral Communication” and Stephen Greer, D4, will present “Diagnosis and Treatment of Vertical Root Factures," as part of Dental Grand Rounds at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Dr. Rachael F. Author to discuss peds oral health's impact in book talk, signing

​Sonja Lauren, author of The Covered Smile, will discuss her book, a tale about her childhood of abuse, neglect and the impact oral health has on a child's life, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, in the student union.

Vice chancellor to speak at fall faculty meeting​

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.

Biobank Mississippi to host precision medicine research initiative

Biobank Mississippi will host a "Precision Medicine Research Initiative" in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic to bring awareness and engagement about precision medicine from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 16-17, in the Guyton Research Center breezeway.

Women at Risk founder to discuss health care's role in trafficking

​Rebecca McDonald, founder and president of Women at Risk International, will give the Division of Continuing Health Professional Education and School of Medicine Community Service Team presentation, "Health Care's Role in Sex Trafficking," from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the student union.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Selected graduate students from diverse backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines will participate in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive competition to provide the best solution for a realistic scenario about complex rural health issues from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in lecture hall 124 in the medical education building.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the event will include participants from Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and UMMC. A reception will follow the competition.
